Description
We are seeking a compassionate, patient and reliable SEN Teaching Assistant to work 1:1 with a Reception-aged child at a large mainstream primary school in Harborne. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting early development and helping children thrive within a nurturing school environment.
About the Role
You will provide dedicated 1:1 support for a child with a range of additional needs, including:
- ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences)
- Nurture-based support
- ASC (Autistic Spectrum Condition)
- Pre-verbal communication needs
The focus will be on creating a safe, supportive and engaging environment that encourages progress in communication, emotional regulation, social interaction and early learning skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consistent 1:1 support to a Reception pupil throughout the school day.
- Use nurturing, trauma-informed and child-centred approaches to build trust and emotional resilience.
- Support pre-verbal communication, using visuals, modelling and alternative communication methods.
- Work closely with the class teacher, SENCo and external professionals to follow tailored support plans.
- Encourage positive interactions, engagement in classroom activities, and confidence-building.
- Help create a calm, structured environment that supports the child’s wellbeing and learning.
- Monitor and record progress, sharing observations with the team when needed.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience supporting children with ASC, communication delays or social/emotional needs (especially in Early Years).
- Ideally a Level 2 or 3 Qualification in a relevant field
- Understanding of nurture principles and trauma-informed practice.
- Ability to remain calm, patient and consistent when supporting emotional or behavioural needs.
- A warm, empathetic and child-focused approach.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
